Hardware and Software Requirements

Notes

The largest installation is running a dual-core virtual Windows 2008 server with 8 GB memory.  There are just under 13,000 cases in the system and the disk space used is about 50 Gb. Performance on the system is excellent. The same system receives DICOM images, anonymizes them, and does some further processing to create cases.  Even while DICOM images are being received, there is excellent performance in delivering case content to clients.

Software

Server

Operating Systems

  • Windows versions, including Windows 10 and 7; Windows Server 2018, 2016, 2012, 2008
  • Linux, including Debian, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, etc.
  • MacOS

32 or 64-bit versions of these operating systems can be used. The server can be installed in a variety of virtualization servers. Java 7 or higher is required to be installed on the server.

Additional required software

  • Oracle Java 7 or 8 JRE or JDK
    • Consult with license status
  • Google Chrome or Firefox on the server for local access to the server if desired

Client

Any modern browser can be used to access the RadPix Teaching File System.  This includes Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer 10 or greater, Safari, and Android web browsers. No additional software is required on the client.  Some cases may use up a large amount of memory, so at least 8 GB RAM is recommended for client PCs, although smaller amounts of memory have been used for cases. Editing large DICOM datasets does require more memory.

Hardware

Client

Cases can be viewed on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and IOS devices.  The pages will scale to fit the device.  Improved visualization of images will be possible on higher quality devices with high resolution screens and high performance processors. Mouse and keyboard input are supported. The software is touch-enabled, including swiping, pinching to zoom, etc.

Server

Since its inception, this software has been able to run on minimal hardware. However, when DICOM images are being received by the system, improved performance can be achieved with modern PC hardware.

Disk Space

Since the price has significantly decreased over the past few years, a minimum disk space of 1 Terabyte is recommended initially, although this amount will probably suffice for several years of usage. Solid state drives will probably improve throughput and processing speed. Disk space required is dependent on the number of images sent to the system. Note: Multiframe DICOM images (ultrasound, angiography) can be very large.

Backup

Routine backup of the system is highly recommended to prevent loss of data in the event of hardware malfunction. For best security, the backup device should be in a different location, to prevent loss in case of fire or flooding.

Networking

1 Gigabyte networking will speed up the receiving and sending of DICOM and other case data.
